Michael Buchberger, The University of Applied Sciences in Steyr, Austria

I am Michael Buchberger, 20 years old and studying “Global Sales Management” at the University of Applied Sciences in Steyr, Austria. I am currently doing my exchange at City University of Hong Kong for 1 semester and I will share with you, some experiences and feelings from the first few months in Hong Kong.

Talking about Hong Kong is like talking about a book with thousands of pages. Every day you encounter new, fascinating places and loveable people with different cultural backgrounds. This city can provide you with Chinese culture as well as western culture; you can spend days in shopping malls, visit tourist hot-spots, climb the peak and explore the islands.

Tasting exotic food and enjoying the night life are also an essential part of staying in this city. There is no word like “boredom” in Hong Kong. But, in case you are tired of city life, you can choose to travel to hundreds of exiting destinations in Asia, because Hong Kong Airport serves as a gateway to all the neighbouring countries and cities. Until the end of my exchange I will visit the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Macau, Shanghai, Beijing and Gui Lin.

But not only travelling should be an important part of an exchange – also studying in a surrounding which supports you and helps you to increase your knowledge is crucial for a successful semester abroad. Choosing City University of Hong Kong is definitely the right decision, because it provides you with excellent professors, a wide range of courses, a huge library, comfortable student residences and an incredible amount of sports facilities.

My feelings as an exchange are difficult to describe because it is always a challenge to adapt to a new culture but the community here at the university and at the student residence is really strong and everybody cares about each other. This makes life much easier here, because it is even more fun to enjoy the city and night life with people you can trust in.
